Swatragh 2-06 Slaughtneil 0-10
Swatragh claimed a hard fought victory against neighbours Slaughtneil for two more precious league points. In a keenly contested encounter stunning goals from Ruairi Convery & Seanie McGuckin gave the home side the win their efforts deserved.
Swatragh started the game firing on all cylinders and with the midfield pairing of Conway & Friel on top, the Davitts raced in to a 0-05 to 0-01 lead by the 22nd minute. However Slaughtneil are never out of the game for long and by half time they had reduced the lead to a solitary point.
Slaughtneil started the second half on top and by the 7th minute they had earned themselves a one point lead. Swatragh hit back in the best possible style with their first goal. Michael Conway intercepted a loose ball out of the Slaughtneil defence and lofted a beautiful (lucky) pass over the top to the lurking Ruairi Convery who finished with aplomb.
The game continued to be nip and tuck with neither side stamping their authority on proceedings but as the game entered the final ten minutes Slaughtneil had once again gotten themselves on level terms.
However Swatragh struck the decisive blow once again from a misplaced Slaughtneil pass. Phillip Mooney cut out a cross field ball and fed it on to Sean McNicholl. He found Seanie McGuckin 40 yards from goal and with the Emmetts defence backtracking he carried the ball forward before firing an unstoppable shot to the top right hand corner of the net.
This proved to be the decisive blow as the Davitts held on for victory. This moves Swatragh a couple of places up the table and out of the play off positions. The next game is at home against Loup, where another victory will guarantee safety.
