Seniors Record Opening Win

Kilrea 1-09 Swatragh 1-10

The Davitts recorded their first victory of the season with a hard fought victory at Pearse Park. Swatragh were the better side for the majority of the game, and only a last kick penalty for Kilrea got them to within a point.

Swatragh played into the breeze in the opening half and midway through the period held a 0-03 to 0-02 lead. In truth Swatragh could have been further ahead, having missed some easy chances. For the remainder of the half play was keenly contested but a 5 minute purple patch gave Kilrea a 0-05 to 0-03 half time lead.

The second half started brightly for Kilrea as they registered the opening score, but after that Swatragh began to take command around the middle and registered scores at regular intervals to keep the score board ticking over.

The killer score came with the game well into the final quarter. A direct pass into the square was well won by Seamus Kearney and he showed great composure to step round the keeper and finish to the empty net.

This gave the Davitts a comfortable advantage, and one they never looked like losing. Deep into injury time Kilrea were awarded a dubious penalty, the foul being committed well outside the square. It was duly converted but it was only a consolation as the referee blew for full time on the kick out.

This was a much improved Swatragh performance. Great commitment was shown throughout the field, and this victory will give the players confidence for the games to come.
