Swatragh 0-13 Bellaghy 0-14
In contrast to their previous fixture this performance from the Davitts was full of commitment and no little quality. Ultimately however, the result was the same, although against much better quality opposition.
Swatragh entered the match without the services of Ruairi Convery & Michael Kirkpatrick injured in midweek. More positively though the Davitts were able to welcome back Sean McNicholl & Robert McWilliams who were unavailable for the previous fixture.
The first half was to set the pattern for the entire match as both side exchanged points regularly and never more than a couple of points between the sides. Swatragh were dominating possession around the middle of the field, but Bellaghy were able to create more space in for their attack, and this enabled them to eek out a single point half time advantage 0-07 to 0-06.
In the second half Swatragh began to play some great football and were not long in taking the lead. As the half wore on the Davitts continued to dominate, but accuracy from placed balls kept Bellaghy in touch.
The decisive moments came with play entering the final quarter. First of all Swatragh were awarded a stone wall penalty which was superbly saved by he Bellaghy keeper. Moments later the Davitts found themselves in on goal again, but were forced to settle for a point.
Having survived two close shaves Bellaghy were in no mood to let Swatragh go unpunished, and another couple of pointed frees gave them the lead and victory at the final whistle
This was a much better team effort from Swatragh, but the will need to continue to improve with the championship opener just weeks away.
