U14 Hurling :Swatragh 2-03 Eoghan Rua 1-02. The under 14 hurlers travelled to Coleraine to play Eoghan Rua in the first game of the Feile na n Gael competition with a weakened team. Swatragh began very brightly and dominated possession from the start despite playing against a very strong wind. With the ball camped in the Eoghan Rua final third the Swatragh forwards couldn’t get the scores on the board. With Cathal Quinn and Ben Deary bossing the full back line and Sean og Bradley, Fintan O’Kane and Sean Quinn controlling the centre half back line there was plenty of ball breaking for the midfield pairing of Tiernan O’Kane and Chrissy O’Kane to work with. Eoghan Rua had a rare break into the Swatragh half and a shot deflected off Ben Deary’s hurl to the back of the net.
At the start of the second half Swatragh began the fight back with 2 frees from Chrissy O’Kane leaving the minimum between the sides, Tiernan O’Kane then scored the best point of the day, he collected the ball near the 45 and despite the pressure from three Eoghan Rua defenders and with his back to goal he hooked a shot over his left shoulder which sailed over the bar to level the sides. A 65 from Chrissy O’Kane then sailed straight to the back of the net to put Swatragh in front. Fintan McGurk began to control things on the three quarter line and another goal followed from Mark Cassidy and Swatragh held on for the win despite a late surge from Eoghan Rua.
Overall this was an excellent performance from a very young team with the older members leading by example with brilliant contributions from Ben Deary, Sean og Bradley, Sean Quinn, Chrissy O’Kane and Tiernan O’Kane.
